Prayers for Memorial Day, 2017

Prayers for Memorial Day

From The Book of Common Prayer, For Heroic Service:
O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much and sacrificed all for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The following is adapted from A Prayer at the Funeral of a Member of the Armed Forces, by The Rt. Reverend Jeffrey W. Rowthorn in his book, The Wideness of God’s Mercy:

Let us ask our Father, who has seen his sons and daughters kill each other, to take pity on us, to weep for us and to give our brave soldiers killed in the line of duty new life in Jesus, our risen Lord.

For our children whom we sent to war, and for all those we sent to die, that they will live on in us, reminding us of the emptiness of hate, and of peace we cannot seem to attain, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For our family and all the families shattered by war, that they will find in their community the healing strength of your love, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For our friends and all whose loved ones have been killed in battle, that they will have the courage to continue giving the warmth of their hearts to those who are still alive, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the veterans who have returned from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, the War on Terror and all other conflicts and peacekeeping missions, and for all the veterans of the world, that their memory of theact of war will be barren and their anger at the war’s carriage will not stop until the world knows peace, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For those mutilated by the war in their hearts and bodies, that they will find hope in Him who created them whole, and support from us, our brother’s keeper, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Father, grant your servants, now with you, peace and everlasting life; help us bear our loss, and give us strength to pursue our quest for the unity and harmony of all your children, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
