A Prayer from Bishop Rob for Veterans Day

Let us this Veterans’ Day join with those throughout our nation who express their deep gratitude for the men and women who took the pledge to defend our country in times of warfare and in trial.  More than most in our society, those who have served our country in the armed forces know the high cost of war and the toll it takes on body, mind, spirit and soul.  May we honor the sacrifices they have made by expressing our gratitude to those we know, those we see in the airports, bus terminals, and the thoroughfares of our daily routines.  It costs us little to say, “Thank you, for your service,” though our increased dependency on the military has incurred real sacrifices among those who put on the uniform on our behalf.  Please remember those being treated and cared for in the burdened Veterans’ Administration health care facilities, and those who remain missing on battlefields far from home.  And let us pray for the day when our Savior, the Prince of Peace, will come and make all violence and war cease in this and every land.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed services at home and abroad.  We lift up also the families of all those who serve and those who care for the wounded and those who bear the scars, both inward and outward, of war.  Defend them all day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
